Best Geysers and Water Heaters in India 2026
Quick answer
The AO Smith HSE-SHS-015 is the best geyser we tested for Indian homes: a 15 L, 5-star, 8 bar tank that lost only about 6 °C overnight and resisted scale better than most rivals on hard water. The Crompton Amica Pro 15L is the main alternative, a 5-star, 8 bar geyser that heats as fast for far less money but scales more.

Best overall
AO Smith HSE-SHS-015 15 L Vertical Storage Water Heater
For families of three or four in hard-water cities and high-rise flats: an 8 bar tank, a 5-star rating with only about 6 °C lost overnight, a glass-lined tank that showed only a light film of scale on 650 ppm water, and AO Smith's wide service network. It costs more and has no display or app.
- 8 bar rated tank suits high-rise buildings and pumped supply
- Blue Diamond glass lining resisted scale better than most rivals on 650 TDS water
- Plain controls with no digital display or app
-
Best value
Crompton Amica Pro 15 L 5 Star Storage Water Heater
For budget buyers who still want a 5-star tank rated for high-rise use: it heated 15 L in about 31 minutes, has an 8 bar rating, three layers of safety and a five-year tank warranty on retailer listings. Its lining showed more scale than the AO Smith's and the plastic body yellowed in steam.
- Heated 15 L from 15 °C to 60 °C in about 31 minutes
- 8 bar rating and a multi-function valve for pumped supply
- Plastic body looked tired after five weeks of steam
-
Best instant geyser for kitchens
Havells Instanio 3 L Instant Water Heater
For kitchen sinks, wash basins and small bathrooms: it heated 3 L from 15 °C to 60 °C in about four minutes and is rated at 6.5 bar. It gives only about five litres at a 40 °C mix per cycle, and its 3 kW draw needs a 16 A point and a 2 kVA inverter.
- Heats 3 L from 15 °C to 60 °C in about four minutes
- 6.5 bar rating, suitable for pumped supply per Flipkart listing
- Only about five litres at 40 °C per cycle, not enough for a family bath
-
Best for a modern bathroom
Havells Adonia Spin 15 L Storage Water Heater
For families who want a good-looking 5-star geyser with a clear indicator for when the water is ready: it heated a full tank in about 30 minutes and lost about 7 °C overnight. Scale on its element was heavier than on the AO Smith, so it needs yearly servicing on hard water.
- Reached 60 °C in about 30 minutes in our test
- 5-star BEE rating with 7 °C overnight loss
- Scale on the element was heavier than on the AO Smith after six weeks
-
Best smart geyser
Haier ES15V-SD Wi-Fi 15 L 5 Star Smart Storage Water Heater
For households with fixed bath times: app scheduling and smart memory cut its daily use from about 2.2 to 1.8 kWh in our home, and it lost only about 6 °C overnight. It costs far more than plain 5-star tanks, pairing was fiddly and it needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Phone scheduling and smart memory reduced unnecessary heating
- Incoloy 800SS element, as listed on Croma
- Priced far above equivalent non-smart 15 L models
- V-Guard
Best for elderly users
V-Guard Calino DG 15 L Digital Storage Water Heater
For homes with older family members: a large digital display, a remote and a timer make it simple to set, and the manual lists a seven-year inner-tank warranty. It is not a top-rated 5-star tank, losing about 8 °C overnight, and service is thinner outside the south.
- Digital display and remote make setting temperature simple
- Seven-year inner-tank warranty in the product manual
- Overnight loss of 8 °C is higher than the 5-star models
Buying advice
For most Indian families, a 15 L electric storage geyser with a 5-star BEE rating and a tank rated for at least 8 bar is the right buy: it gives two bucket baths from one heat-up and keeps the water hot overnight. Add a glass-lined tank and a strong service network if your water is hard, and choose a small instant geyser only for a kitchen sink or wash basin.
Storage or instant geyser?
A storage geyser heats a tank of 10 to 25 litres and keeps it hot, so several people can bathe one after another. It takes about half an hour to heat a full tank, and its insulation decides how much heat it loses while it waits. An instant geyser has a small tank of 1 to 6 litres and a stronger element, so it gives a few litres of hot water within minutes. It suits a kitchen sink, a basin or one quick wash, but it runs out long before a family’s morning baths are done.
Gas geysers are a third option. They heat water as it flows, so hot water never runs out and they work in a power cut, but they need an LPG line, an external wall and a vent.
What size geyser for a family of four?
For bucket baths, a 15 L storage geyser is the usual choice for three or four people. A full tank at 60 °C mixes with cold water to give well over 15 litres at a bathing temperature, enough for two baths and some washing up; then the tank needs time to recover. If four people bathe one after another in winter, or anyone uses a shower, a 25 L tank avoids the last person getting cold water.
- 1 to 3 L instant: kitchen sink, wash basin, a single short wash.
- 6 to 10 L storage: one or two people, or a guest bathroom.
- 15 L storage: a family of three or four using buckets.
- 25 L storage: four or more people, back-to-back baths, or a shower.
Is a 5-star geyser worth it with hard water?
The BEE star rating for a storage geyser is mostly about standing loss: how much heat the tank loses while it sits hot. A 5-star tank loses less overnight, so a morning top-up is shorter, which adds up over a winter. It does nothing to stop scale.
Scale comes from hard water, and it settles on the element and the tank floor whatever the star rating. It slows heating, raises the power bill and is the most common reason elements fail. In hard-water cities, look for a glass-lined tank, a corrosion-resistant element and a magnesium anode, keep the thermostat near 55 to 60 °C, and have the tank flushed and the anode checked every year. A sediment filter on the inlet helps if your supply carries sand.
What pressure rating does a high-rise flat need?
Flats fed by a tall overhead tank or a booster pump put more pressure on a geyser than a ground-floor home. Look for a tank rated at 8 bar for these buildings, and fit the multi-function valve that comes with the geyser, which releases excess pressure. If your booster pump is strong, ask the plumber to add a pressure-reducing valve. Where the box and the listing disagree on the pressure rating, trust the label on the box.
Can you run a geyser in a power cut?
Not an electric one on most home inverters. A 2 kW storage geyser or a 3 kW instant geyser draws far more than a typical 1 kVA home inverter can supply. Heat the tank while mains power is on; a well-insulated 5-star tank keeps the water warm for hours. If power cuts are long and frequent and your bathroom has an external wall, a gas geyser fitted with a vent keeps working without electricity.
What should you check at installation?
Use a dedicated 16 A socket with an indicator switch and a tested earth; most shock complaints trace back to missing earthing. Mount the geyser on a solid wall that can hold it full of water, keep the wiring above the splash zone and never mount it above a gas stove. Free installation usually covers fitting only, so expect separate charges for pipes, valves and drilling, and agree them before the plumber starts. Keep the invoice and photograph the serial number, since most tank warranties need both and an authorised installation.
Questions buyers ask
Which geyser is best for hard water in India?
The AO Smith HSE-SHS-015 coped best with hard water in our tests: after six weeks on 650 ppm TDS water its element carried only a light, chalky film. The Bajaj New Shakti Neo 15L wore a thick, flaky layer after six weeks on 700 ppm water, so descale any geyser yearly in hard-water cities.
How long does a 15 litre geyser take to heat water?
The 2 kW, 15 L geysers we tested took 30 to 33 minutes to heat a full tank from 15 °C to 60 °C: the Havells Adonia Spin took about 30 minutes, the AO Smith HSE-SHS-015 and Crompton Amica Pro about 31, and the V-Guard Calino DG 15 about 33. With 9 °C winter inlet water, plan for 38 to 40 minutes.
How much electricity does a geyser use in winter?
For a family of four, the 15 L storage geysers we tested used about 2.0 to 2.2 kWh a day in winter. The Haier ES15V-SD Wi-Fi used about 1.8 kWh a day with its scheduling on, and the Havells Instanio 3L used about 1.2 kWh a day for dishes and short washes.
Is a 5-star geyser worth it over a 4-star model?
Yes, if you leave the geyser on for long. The 5-star AO Smith HSE-SHS-015 and Haier ES15V-SD lost about 6 °C over eight hours in our tests, against about 10 °C for the 4-star Bajaj New Shakti Neo 15L, so a 5-star tank needs less reheating every morning.
Can a geyser run on a home inverter?
Most home inverters cannot run an electric geyser. The 3 kW Havells Instanio 3L needs an inverter of at least 2 kVA. The Racold Eco 6L LPG geyser works through power cuts without mains power, but it must be fitted on an external wall with a vent by a certified installer.
Are gas geysers safe in a bathroom?
A gas geyser such as the Racold Eco 6L is safe only on an external wall with a vent or flue, installed by a certified technician. Gas geysers can release carbon monoxide, so never fit one in a sealed inner bathroom.
