Our verdict

The AO Smith HSE-SHS-015 is a 15 litre, 2 kW, 5-star storage geyser with an 8 bar tank and a Blue Diamond glass lining, and it is the safest long-term pick we tested for hard water and high-rise flats.

Buy it if

  • Families of three to four in hard-water cities who want a geyser that lasts a decade
  • High-rise flats with overhead tanks or booster pumps
  • Buyers who value a wide service network over app features

Skip it if

  • You want Wi-Fi or app control
  • You only need a few litres of hot water a day and a cheap instant geyser would do

What we like

  • 8 bar rated tank suits high-rise buildings and pumped supply
  • Blue Diamond glass lining resisted scale better than most rivals on 650 TDS water
  • Lost only about 6 °C overnight in a closed bathroom
  • Heating element and tank are separate warranty items, so the tank is covered for five years
  • Large service network with technicians in most towns

What we don’t

  • Plain controls with no digital display or app
  • Priced above Crompton and Bajaj 15 L models
  • Installation kit and plumbing are chargeable by the technician

The AO Smith HSE-SHS-015 is a plain, sturdy 15 litre geyser for a family of three or four in a city with hard water. The trade-off is that you pay noticeably more than for a similar-sized Crompton or Bajaj and get no display, timer or app in return.

How long does it take to heat 15 litres?

From a 15 °C tank to 60 °C took 31 minutes on the 2 kW element. That is close to the physical minimum for this volume, so there is little to gain from a faster-looking rival. Once hot, the mixed output was about 24 litres at 40 °C, enough for two short bucket baths and a round of washing-up before the temperature starts to fall. In a north Indian January, when inlet water drops towards 8 °C, expect the first heat-up to run closer to 38 minutes.

Does it lose heat overnight?

We left the tank at 60 °C for eight hours in a closed bathroom at 18 °C and it fell by 6 °C. That is a good result and matches the 5-star BEE band. The practical benefit is that a morning top-up needs only a few minutes of heating rather than a full cycle.

How does it cope with hard water and scaling?

Our borewell supply measured 650 ppm TDS. After six weeks we inspected the element, and there was a light, chalky film rather than a crust. The Blue Diamond lining and the glass-coated element are both built for this, but no geyser is immune: plan a descaling and anode check every 12 months, and use a sediment filter on the inlet if your water carries sand.

Is it safe, and will it work in a high-rise flat?

The tank is rated at 8 bar, and the unit includes a thermostat, thermal cut-out and a multi-function valve that vents excess pressure. That combination makes it one of the few 15 litre models we would install without worry on a floor fed by a booster pump. The shock-safe wiring is only as good as your earthing, so ask the electrician to test the earth and fit a 16 A switch with indicator.

What does it cost to run for a family of four?

Over a typical winter week we metered about 2.1 kWh a day, including the standing loss. At ₹8 per unit that is roughly ₹500 a month. A timer plug that switches the geyser on 30 minutes before the first bath reduces this by about 15 per cent compared with leaving it on.

What about installation and service?

Installation by an authorised technician is not free of cost in most cities; expect separate charges for pipes, the valve and wall drilling. AO Smith’s service network is among the widest in India, and owners most often praise quick visits and available spares. Common complaints are about extra fitting charges and the brand’s higher entry price.

When should I flush the tank and check the anode?

Plan a visit once a year, or every nine months if your water is above 500 ppm TDS. The technician drains the tank, scrapes loose scale from the element and checks the magnesium anode, which sacrifices itself to protect the glass lining. A thin anode is the early sign of trouble, and replacing it costs far less than replacing a tank. Do this before winter, not in January when technicians are booked for weeks.

Who should buy something else?

Choose the Haier Wi-Fi model if you want app control and scheduling, or the Crompton Amica Pro if budget matters more than lining and service reach.

How we tested

We mounted the unit in a north-facing bathroom, filled it from 15 °C supply and timed heat-up to 60 °C, then drew water to a 40 °C mix. We logged overnight temperature loss, metered kWh over a typical week for four people and opened the tank-side fittings after six weeks to compare scale.

We bought this unit at retail price.

Questions buyers ask

Is the AO Smith HSE-SHS-015 good for hard water?

Yes. The AO Smith HSE-SHS-015 uses a Blue Diamond glass-lined tank, and after six weeks on 650 ppm TDS water we saw only a thin film of scale on the element. Flushing the tank once a year is still advised.

Can the AO Smith HSE-SHS-015 be used in a high-rise building?

Yes. The AO Smith HSE-SHS-015 is rated for 8 bar, which covers overhead tanks and booster-pump lines. Use the supplied multi-function valve and a pressure-reducing valve if your pump is unusually strong.

How much electricity does the AO Smith HSE-SHS-015 use?

For four people in winter we measured about 2.1 kWh a day, roughly ₹500 a month at ₹8 per unit. Setting the thermostat to 55 °C instead of 65 °C trims this noticeably.

What warranty does the AO Smith HSE-SHS-015 carry?

Retailer listings state five years on the tank, two years on the heating element and two years on the product. Check the warranty card in the box, as terms can differ by seller.
