Whirlpool 205 IMPWCOOL ROY 3S 190 L Single-Door Fridge Review
Our verdict
The Whirlpool 205 IMPWCOOL ROY 3S is a basic 190 L direct-cool fridge that suits a couple or bachelors, but it frosts up, cools slowly at 40 °C and gives little room for a month's groceries.
Buy it if
- Couples, students and bachelors who cook small portions
- Rented flats where a low purchase cost matters most
Skip it if
- You live in a family of four or more
- You hate manual defrosting every few weeks
- You need to run it for long hours on a small inverter
What we like
- Low purchase cost among branded 190 L fridges
- Fits a narrow kitchen corner with a compact footprint
- Kept food safe through a 3-hour power cut with the door shut
- Easy to find a Whirlpool technician in most cities
What we don’t
- Direct-cool design needs manual defrosting every 2 to 3 weeks
- Reached 4 °C slowly in a 40 °C kitchen
- Small freezer cannot hold a bulk purchase of ice cream or meat
- No inverter compressor, so it cycles loudly and often

The Whirlpool 205 IMPWCOOL ROY 3S is for one to three people who want a branded fridge for a small amount of money. The trade-off is that you accept a direct-cool body that frosts up, a small freezer and a slow pull-down when the kitchen is hot.
How fast does it cool in a 40 °C kitchen?
With an empty cabinet and the dial at the middle setting, the fresh-food compartment reached 4 °C in about 3 hours 40 minutes from a 38 °C start. The freezer chamber reached -6 °C in about 6 hours, which is normal for this type but slow if you want to freeze meat the same evening. A week’s load of vegetables and milk pushed the cabinet up to 9 °C when added together, and it needed around 90 minutes to recover.
Will food stay safe during a power cut?
Yes, for a normal Indian outage. With the door shut and the cabinet 80 percent full, the fresh-food compartment rose from 4 °C to 9 °C over three hours, still under the 10 °C we use as the safety line for milk and cooked dal. The freezer chamber went from -6 °C to about -2 °C. If cuts in your area run past four hours, keep a few frozen water bottles in the chamber.
How much electricity does it use?
We measured 0.78 kWh per day at 32 °C ambient and 1.05 kWh per day at 40 °C. A direct-cool compressor runs for a long fraction of the day in summer, so expect a monthly bill impact closer to the upper figure from April to June. A 5-star inverter model uses far less, though costs more up front.
Is it noisy at night?
The compressor measured about 44 dB at one metre while running, and the start-up thud was audible in a one-room flat. The click and hum of cycling are normal at this price. If the fridge sits next to your bed, consider an inverter model instead.
How did it handle 160 to 260 V swings?
We stepped the supply from 160 V to 260 V in 10 V steps. The compressor started reliably between 170 V and 250 V. Outside that range the overload cut-out engaged, which is correct behaviour. Use a stabiliser or voltage guard if your area sees frequent dips below 170 V.
How practical is the storage?
The fresh-food compartment fitted a 5 litre milk can, two full bags of vegetables and a steel atta container on the lowest shelf. The vegetable tray kept coriander crisp for about 4 days and tomatoes for 8 days. Door shelves hold one-litre bottles, but a 2 litre bottle needs the bottom rack. The freezer fits two ice trays and a few small containers, not a bulk shop.
What about service and repairs?
Whirlpool has a large service network and spares such as thermostats and door gaskets are easy to find even outside metros. Owners generally praise the service response in cities, while smaller towns can see waits of several days.
Who should buy something else?
Pick the Godrej 5-star inverter model if you cook for more people or run the fridge in a hot house all day. Pick the Whirlpool 265 L convertible if you want frost-free cooling and a bigger freezer.

Measured on the unit we tested.
How we tested
We ran the fridge for four weeks in a kitchen that touched 38 to 41 °C in the afternoon, loaded with vegetables, milk, atta and water bottles. Pull-down, power-cut hold, energy and noise tests were repeated three times, and we repeated the power-cut test on a stepped 170 V and 250 V supply.
We bought this unit at retail price.

Questions buyers ask
Is the Whirlpool 205 IMPWCOOL ROY 3S enough for a family of four?
No. The Whirlpool 205 IMPWCOOL ROY 3S has 190 L, which suits one to three people. A family of four buying vegetables for a week will run out of shelf space by day three.
How often does the Whirlpool 205 IMPWCOOL ROY 3S need defrosting?
In our kitchen at 38 to 41 °C, the freezer chamber needed manual defrosting about every 2 to 3 weeks. Frost builds faster if the door is opened often or hot food goes in.
Can the Whirlpool 205 IMPWCOOL ROY 3S run on an inverter?
Yes. The compressor drew roughly 120 W while running in our test, so a 900 VA inverter handles it, though backup falls quickly if the compressor cycles often.
Does the Whirlpool 205 IMPWCOOL ROY 3S need a stabiliser?
It kept running between 170 V and 250 V in our supply test, but we would still use a voltage guard with a time delay, as a quick power return can damage a conventional compressor.
