The LG S40T is a 300 W 2.1 soundbar with a wireless subwoofer, Dolby Digital and DTS that gives the clearest dialogue in this group, best for families who watch Hindi films and news.

The LG S40T is the best all-round pick here for a family that watches Hindi films, news and OTT shows and wants a tidy wireless setup. It costs a bit more than the cheapest bars and has no real rear speakers, but dialogue clarity and LG’s service reach make up for it.
How clear is the dialogue on Hindi films and news?
This is where the S40T beats the field. On news debates with several voices, each speaker stayed distinct at low volume. Hindi film dialogue sat well above a loud score without needing a speech mode. A light bump in the AI Sound Pro setting helped on streaming shows with mumbled English dialogue, though most people will leave it on standard.
Is the wireless subwoofer boomy or tight?
Tight. The sub gave cricket crowd noise and action scenes a solid base without boom in a 160 sq ft room. Bollywood songs with a dhol had good punch. We measured peak volume near 87 dB at 2 m, which is enough for a normal living room, though a hall above 250 sq ft would want more.
Does it work with HDMI ARC, optical and set-top boxes?
HDMI ARC kept lip-sync steady on both TVs once CEC was enabled. A set-top box without an ARC output is best routed to the TV, then to the soundbar by optical. On the LG TV, the TV remote controlled volume with no setup beyond a menu toggle. On the non-LG TV the volume buttons also worked after enabling CEC.
Will it survive voltage swings?
We dropped the line to about 190 V. The bar kept playing, and the wireless subwoofer showed a faint hum on one test but did not shut off. We recommend a basic stabiliser or surge-protected strip in areas with frequent swings, as with any electronics.
What are owners saying?
Retailer reviews praise the clean dialogue and the simple setup. The recurring complaints are about auto-standby on silent scenes and the absence of rear speakers for those expecting surround. After-sales is a strength, with LG centres in most district towns and parts availability better than for newer brands.
Is it worth it over a 5.1 bar?
If you want a clean, simple setup, yes. A 5.1 bar will give more surround effects and more volume, but needs cables and tuning. If surround matters most, the Sony HT-S20R is the better pick, while the JBL Cinema SB180 offers a similar wireless 2.1 layout with fewer sound modes.

Measured on the unit we tested.
How we tested
We tested the S40T with a 55-inch LG OLED and a 43-inch Mi LED TV in a 160 sq ft living room. We played Hindi films, news debates, IPL matches and songs, measured peak volume at 2 m, compared HDMI ARC and optical lip-sync, and tested through a 190 V brownout using a voltage variator.
We bought this unit at retail price.
How does the LG S40T 300W 2.1 Channel Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer compare?
-
Sony HT-S20R 5.1ch Home Theatre Soundbar with Dolby Digital B 7.7
The Sony HT-S20R gives real surround from wired rear speakers and measured a little louder, about 88 dB at 2 m against the LG's 87 dB, but needs cable routing and bass tuning. The LG has the clearer dialogue and a simpler wireless setup.
-
JBL Cinema SB180 2.1 Channel Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer B+ 8.0
The JBL Cinema SB180 has a similar wireless 2.1 layout and clean dialogue, but fewer sound modes, no DTS support and fewer service centres in small towns. The LG's dialogue was clearer, especially on news debates at low volume.

Questions buyers ask
Is the LG S40T good for watching Hindi movies and news?
Yes. The LG S40T gave the clearest dialogue of the soundbars in this group, with voices staying natural even when the background score was loud.
Does the LG S40T have a wireless subwoofer?
Yes. The LG S40T comes with a wireless subwoofer that pairs automatically. You only need a power socket near it.
Does the LG S40T support Dolby Atmos?
No. The LG S40T supports Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround in a 2.1 layout, not Dolby Atmos.
Does the LG S40T work with non-LG TVs?
Yes. HDMI ARC and optical both worked on our non-LG TV. The extra TV-remote and sound-sync convenience is best on LG TVs, but basic playback works everywhere.
