Bosch SMV46KX01E Built-In Dishwasher Review: Hidden Workhorse
Our verdict
The Bosch SMV46KX01E is a fully integrated 13-place dishwasher that cleans quietly and uses about 9.5 L per cycle, but needs a planned modular kitchen and costs far more than freestanding rivals.
Buy it if
- Modular kitchens being built or renovated with a space for a 60 cm dishwasher
- Buyers who want a hidden, quiet machine
Skip it if
- You rent or have a finished kitchen with no slot
- You want Wi-Fi or an Indian-specific kadhai programme
What we like
- Used about 9.5 L per Eco cycle
- Measured about 47 dB, quieter than most freestanding models here
- Cabinet door hides it and keeps the kitchen uniform
- AquaStop leak protection
- Cleaned dal-stained steel and oily plates well on Auto
What we don’t
- No Indian kadhai programme and no confirmed app support
- Eco cycle runs about 3 hours 5 minutes
- Needs a cabinet cut-out and a joiner for the door
- Priced above comparable freestanding units, and some stores list it out of stock

The Bosch SMV46KX01E is for people designing a modular kitchen who want the dishwasher hidden behind a cabinet door. The trade-off is cost and planning: it is expensive, and a dishwasher slot has to be built into the kitchen.
How do you fit a built-in dishwasher in India?
You need a 60 cm wide slot, 81.5 cm height under the counter, and the inlet, drain and socket within reach. Your carpenter fits the kitchen door to the front panel and the dealer connects the plumbing. Allow about a week for fitting if the cabinets are already made. Do not order the unit without the cut-out dimensions.
Does it clean kadhai, dal and tawa?
Mostly. Dal dried on a pressure-cooker lid for six hours came clean on Auto (2 hours 20 minutes) with a light mark at the weld. An oily kadhai was clean after one cycle, while a seasoned tawa kept a film. There is no Indian kadhai programme, unlike the Series 6, so you rely on Auto and the Intensive cycle.
What about haldi stains and steel tumblers?
Plastic dabbas held a pale yellow tint after three cycles. Steel tumblers had few water spots at 420 ppm once we used salt and rinse aid. Drying is by condensation, and plastic lids stayed damp.
How loud is it?
We measured about 47 dB at one metre on Auto, in line with the 46 dB seen on retailer listings. Hidden behind a cabinet door, it is barely audible from the living room.
How much does it cost to run?
Bosch’s spec sheet lists 9.5 L and 94 kWh per 100 Eco cycles, and we saw about 1.0 kWh on Auto. With a tablet, salt, rinse aid and power at ₹8 per unit, one cycle a day costs about ₹680 a month. Eco is cheaper but takes over three hours.
Does it work in hard water and power cuts?
Use salt, since white film appears quickly without it. After a short power cut the cycle continued. A small inverter will not run the heater.
Is it still sold, and what about service?
Several international retailers list this model as discontinued, and Indian prices vary widely, so confirm stock before planning a kitchen around it. Bosch’s service network is among the broader ones for dishwashers.
Is a built-in dishwasher worth it in a modular kitchen?
It is a design choice more than a performance one. The cleaning results match a freestanding Bosch, but you pay extra for the hidden look and the door fitting. If your kitchen already has a free 60 cm slot, a freestanding unit placed there gets nearly identical results for less money. Choose the built-in only when matching cabinet fronts matter to you.
Should I buy salt and rinse aid in bulk?
Buy a 1.5 to 2 kg pack of dishwasher salt and a litre of rinse aid at a time; both last two to three months at one cycle a day. Use only dishwasher salt in the softener, never table salt or detergent, and check the indicator weekly.
Who should buy something else?
If you do not have a slot, buy the freestanding Bosch SMS6ITI00I. If you want steam and an app, choose the LG.

How we tested
We tested the Bosch built into a modular kitchen for five weeks with tap water near 420 ppm and a family of four. Burnt dal, haldi stains, an oily kadhai and steel tumblers were washed three times each on Auto and Eco. Cycle times, litres and sound were measured with a stopwatch, flow meter and sound meter at one metre.
The brand lent us this unit. They did not see or approve this review. Bosch lent this unit for 8 weeks and took it back afterwards. Bosch did not see the text before publication and has no say in the score.
How does the Bosch Serie 4 SMV46KX01E Fully Integrated 13 Place Dishwasher compare?
-
Bosch Series 6 SMS6ITI00I Free-Standing 13 Place Dishwasher A− 8.6
The freestanding Series 6 cleans oily cookware better, has app control and costs less. This built-in only wins on noise and looks.
-
LG QuadWash DFB424FP Free-Standing 14 Place Dishwasher B+ 8.1
The LG holds an extra place setting, adds steam and Wi-Fi and needs no cabinet work, but it is not hidden behind a door.
