These were the two highest-rated chimneys in our tests, but they suit different kitchens. The V-Guard is a 60 cm BLDC hood that punches above its size; the Faber is a wide 90 cm hood for big hobs and heavy frying.
Which clears smoke better?
On tadka, they were close: about 2 minutes 40 seconds for the V-Guard and 2 minutes 50 seconds for the Faber, though the Faber worked through a longer duct with two bends. On frying, a batch of puris cleared in about 5 minutes under the V-Guard and pakoras in under 6 minutes under the Faber. The Faber’s real advantage is width: a 90 cm hood catches smoke from the far burners of a four-burner hob, where 60 cm hoods struggle.
How much quieter and cheaper to run is the BLDC V-Guard?
Clearly quieter and far more frugal. At top speed the V-Guard measured about 58 dB against about 64 dB for the Faber, which is the difference between talking over the hood and raising your voice. It drew about 65 W at top speed against a peak near 190 W for the Faber, and ran a whole cooking session on a 1 kVA inverter with lights and a fan.
How do auto-clean and upkeep compare?
Both are filterless with heat auto-clean, so there are no baffles to scrub. The V-Guard needed its first cycle after about 16 days of daily frying, and the Faber after about 3 weeks. Cycles took about 24 and 25 minutes, and both left a little film to wipe.
What about service and installation?
Faber has one of the wider service networks among chimney brands, while V-Guard’s chimney service is thinner, especially in smaller towns, so check your pin code. The Faber is heavy and needs two people to mount, and a 90 cm hood can block a window or cupboard doors in older flats, so measure first.
