Both are automatic upper-arm monitors from Omron, and both read close to our reference monitor. The choice comes down to who measures, how big the arm is, and whether anyone will look at the readings on a phone.
Which is easier for an elderly parent?
The HEM-7121. It has one start button and a large display, and a 68-year-old tester with mild tremor completed a reading without help on the first try. The HEM-7156T also works on its own once paired, but pairing took five to ten minutes on two of our four phones, so an older parent may need a child to set it up once.
Which fits a larger arm?
The HEM-7156T. Its pre-formed IntelliWrap cuff closed without gaps on our 24 to 40 cm arms. The HEM-7121 cuff fitted 24 to 30 cm arms well, but on a 34 cm arm it closed with little overlap and gave readings we discarded. Measure the upper arm midway between shoulder and elbow before you choose.
Which runs longer on batteries?
The HEM-7121 gave about 300 readings on a set of alkaline AA cells; the HEM-7156T gave about 220, since Bluetooth syncing uses more power. Neither includes an adapter in the box, so keep spare AA cells at home for power cuts.
Is the app worth paying for?
Only if someone will use it. The Omron Connect app lists each reading with date and time and shows trends, which helps when a son or daughter tracks a parent’s readings from another city. If the readings will go into a notebook for the next doctor visit, the HEM-7121 does the job for less.
Questions buyers ask
Which is more accurate, the Omron HEM-7121 or the Omron HEM-7156T?
Both read on average about 2 mmHg below our reference upper-arm monitor on systolic. Three readings a minute apart varied by about 3 mmHg on the Omron HEM-7121 and about 4 mmHg on the Omron HEM-7156T. Neither result is a clinical validation, so check validatebp.org for the exact model.
Which Omron fits a larger arm, the HEM-7121 or the HEM-7156T?
The Omron HEM-7156T. Its IntelliWrap cuff is listed for about 22-42 cm and closed on our 24 to 40 cm arms. The Omron HEM-7121 cuff is listed for 22-32 cm and barely closed on a 34 cm arm.
Does the Omron HEM-7121 have Bluetooth?
No. The Omron HEM-7121 has no app or Bluetooth and stores 30 readings, so photograph the screen or keep a diary. The Omron HEM-7156T syncs readings to the Omron Connect app on Android and iOS.
