These are the two strongest freestanding dishwashers we tested, and both handle Indian cookware far better than the budget machines. The Bosch is the better cleaner on baked-on food; the LG is the quieter machine with more space and steam.

Which cleans kadhai and burnt dal better?

The Bosch. On IntensivePlus it cleared dal dried for six hours on a pressure-cooker lid, leaving only a thin film in a pot’s weld seam, and an oily kadhai came out clean when loaded at an angle. The LG also cleared the dal on Intensive with TrueSteam, with a faint ring on the lid’s rim, and cleaned an oily kadhai, but a seasoned iron tawa kept a grey film and needed a second pass. Neither removed the haldi tint from plastic dabbas.

How much quieter is the LG?

Noticeably. At one metre the LG measured about 46 dB on Auto and the Bosch about 51 dB. The Bosch is a quiet hum you will hear in an open-plan flat but not from the bedroom; the LG is the one you can run while people watch TV next to the kitchen.

Which finishes faster?

Neither is quick on its best programmes. The Bosch’s Auto cycle took about 2 hours 10 minutes and IntensivePlus about 2 hours 25 minutes, while the LG’s Auto took about 2 hours 20 minutes and Intensive about 2 hours 15 minutes. The Bosch also has a 55-minute Normal Express cycle for tea cups and lightly soiled plates.

Which is better for hard water and drying?

Both need salt and rinse aid on hard water. The Bosch’s softener at its top setting left steel tumblers nearly spot-free on 450 ppm water, and its Extra Dry option fixed damp plastics. The LG left a few spots at 380 ppm until salt went in, and its Extra Dry option fixed most damp lids too. Both have app control: Home Connect on the Bosch and ThinQ on the LG.
